Center Township Receives

Township of the Year Award

Center Township was named the 2016 Charles Bogden Memorial Township of the Year by the Indiana Township Association during the annual educational conference held in Indianapolis September 18-21.

Trustee Dr. Robert A Lee accepted the award on behalf of the township which is located in the center of Howard County sharing many areas with the city of Kokomo. Trustee Lee recognized his staff members as Team Trustee as he was presented the award. Lee noted that the township would not have the list of accomplishments if not for the great staff with which he works stating that the day after the disaster of the tornado had struck Kokomo, he and his staff were setting up even before electricity was restored to the township office to begin the process of giving assistance.

The annual award, named for Charles Bogden, a former board member of Wayne Township of Marion County, is to be presented to a township that demonstrates accomplishments that are above the call of duty rather than simply good public service as the law requires. The committee, comprised of former winners of the Trustee of the Year award, determined that Center Township met the criteria for several reasons including their commitment to excellence and service especially their response to the recent disaster which effected hundreds of Center Township residents. Dr. Lee noted that the process of recovery and meeting the needs of those many residents is on-going.

Debbie Driskell, executive director of the ITA, presented the award to Dr. Lee acknowledging that she had recently spoken with him about the process of recovery. Dr. Lee was accompanied to the presentation dinner by six members of his 13 member staff, all thirteen of whom had been in attendance for the training offered during the conference. In accepting the award, Dr. Lee adduced that it takes a great team comprised of staff, the township board, and the community working together to serve those who need it most, not only in times of major catastrophes, but also everyday life for those who are without the basic necessities. Lee stated that although the leader is brought forward, it takes not only a village to raise a child, it takes a great team to sustain that child.
